Android 4.3 hits the Galaxy S3 & Note 2 across Canada

image

While Google has just released Android 4.4.1 for the Newest Nexus device the Nexus 5 Samsung is playing catch up with its 2012 devices. The Galaxy S3 & Galaxy Note 2 here in Canada are presently receiving their 4.3 updates which bring along a list of new features, UI enhancements, Notification improvements, performance improvements & more including a very important improvement which is battery life.

The update is hitting both of these devices on all carriers across Canada right now so if you haven’t received notice on your device head to the Settings – About Phone  & hit that Software update icon to take advantage ASAP.

Improvements to the Galaxy S3 seem to be all good right now from our test device & the best Improvement so far seems to be battery life as our test device has made it through a full day of use which it couldn’t come close prior to this 4.3 update.

Will bring you more on this update as we have a little more time with the S3. Let us know anything good or bad you’ve noticed on either the S3 or Note 2 after receiving this 4.3 update we’d love to hear from you.

The Moto G is a top level midrange device at an entry level price & it’s headed to Koodo in the coming weeks

image

Motorola just announced a very exciting device which is as solid a midrange device as it get’s, made more impressive by the low outright price tag attached to it. This device we’re so excited about is the Moto G & that mind blowing low price is just $179 for the 8gb & $199 for the 16gb if purchased directly from Motorola in the US.
You might be saying to yourself “we’ve seen phones for that price already, so what’s so impressive about this phone?”
Well it’s the specs & features you get packed into the Moto G that make that price so damn impressive.

You see the Moto G packs :

– A Beautiful 4.5″ 720p HD LCD display 329ppi (in comparison the Moto X is only 316ppi)
– A Fast 1.2ghz Quad Core Snapdragon 400 processor
– 1gb of Ram
– A 5mp rear camera capable of shooting 720p video
– A 1.3mp front facing camera which is great for video calls
– A 2070mAh Battery
– It’s Running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean & confirmed to be updated to Android 4.4 Kit Kat in January
– It Comes in 8gb & 16gb storage options
– Has the same ergonomic design as the Moto X but slightly thicker which is great because as you seen in our review of the Moto X we think it’s the most comfortable device in the hand of any device ever made.

Compare these specs to other phones in the $200 outright price range & you’ll see what makes this device so attractive.

While we do know that the Moto G is for sure coming to Koodo in the coming weeks we’re not sure about colour or storage options that will be offered or pricing. We have heard rumours of only the black model being offered & only in an 8gb storage option which we’re hoping to be false. We’d really like to see the 16gb model being offered which in our opinion is the lowest storage option that should be offered when there is no external storage option (SD Card) available on a mobile device.
We have heard a rumour that Koodo will sell the 8gb Moto G  for $200 outright but we’ll let you know the full details once they’re available from Koodo, until then check out the full launch event of the Moto X from Motorola below.

Koodo now offering the HTC Desire 601

image

Well Koodo has expanded their line up of Device offerings this week & one of those New offerings is the Desire 601 from HTC. The Desire 601 is a midrange device with a sleek & sexy rounded design reminiscent of the HTC ONE X & X+ with that beautiful matte finish.
Other than the sleek design another huge pro of this device is the front firing boom sound dual stereo speakers like those found on the HTC ONE.
The HTC ONE has the best sound hands down from any mobile device on the market today because of these speakers with built in amplifier & the Desire 601 should sound just as great. That great sound is further enhanced when paired with the mini woofer accessory HTC has recently released to bring even more bass & full sound when listening to music or watching a video.
Find the full specifications of this device below & stay tuned for a full review coming in a future article.

The Desire 601 is available in black only & at an outright price of just $300 or $0 on the Medium Tab. You can grab yourself one from your local koodo kiosk, retail partners (future shop, Best Buy, Mobile Shop, ect) or from Koodo’s own webstore today.

Desire 601 features:
– Android™ 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
– 1.4 GHz Dual-core processor
– 4.5” HD Super LCD display
– 5MP rear camera, VGA front-facing camera
– 8GB internal memory (expandable up to 64GB)
– LTE compatible
– 2100 mAh battery
– Dual front speaker with amplifier

Has anyone snatched up this beauty (what do you think?) or is it on your list of possible next devices? Let us know in the comments below

Galaxy S4 update hitting the phone for Telus & Koodo customers

image

The Galaxy S4 for Telus/Koodo (possibly Bell, Virgin, Rogers & Fido as well) is now receiving a nice update that brings many tweaks to the amazing device, including the ability to move apps to the SD Card.

This is good news for users who own the 16Gb version of the Galaxy S4, which ships with only 9.15GB of user accessible storage space. This update alleviates this storage crunch by letting users move apps to the SD card. It also slightly increases available storage to 9.23GB.
image

Besides the app to SD card feature, this new firmware also includes the following:

-Stability & performance upgrades
-slight increase of internal storage
-New Camera firmware
-Smearing issue has been fixed (Purple effect while scrolling)
-Smart Pause Toggle
-Move Apps to SD Card
-HDR Video (Can record HDR video)
-Semi-transparent status bar
New Icons in Settings
Secure boot status (About Phone)
-Increase legibility (Display) (New feature)
image

Galaxy S4 owners can update their handset using Samsung Kies software or wait for the update to arrive over the air.

*Update – After moving what I can I gained a full 1gb of space on my internal storage which is awesome IMO.
Update took about 45 minutes to complete so make sure you have the time. It’s also just over 300mb in size so have the space available to download before install.

I’m sure Bell & Rogers & their sister companies are also receiving this great update as well, but if someone could confirm this we’d really appreciate it. Thanks.

Have you received the update, how do you like it & do you notice a performance boost?

Galaxy S3 in Canada Gets update that brings Multi Window & More

image

The Galaxy S3 has received an update to its OS through OTA and Kies methods. It’s available ON Telus, Koodo, Virgin, Rogers, Bell, Fido & MTS users. The  OS remains at Android version 4.1.2 but is build MVLDMF1. Included is improvements to the gallery,
Improved download speeds when HSPA+ network coverage, Multi Window Feature, as well as addressing  instances where third party VoIP apps could interfere when dialing E911.
So if you haven’t received a notification of the update yet hit the settings – about phone – and check for update, or fire up KIES on your PC & connect your S3 to grab the update now.
I haven’t had much time to check out the update myself & will be doing so later today, but until then if you’ve noticed any more changes feel free to let us know & we will add it to the list of improvements. As well let us know if battery or performance seem to be improved after updating. Just hit us up in the comments below.

Samsung beginning to roll out an update to fix limited storage space on Galaxy S4

image

Samsung is said to have started rolling out an update to one model of the Galaxy S4 with more models to come that will fix the issue of limited internal storage space on the S4.

How will this be done?
Well it looks like they are making it so the device will allow the transfer of apps to your SD Card, in a pre Jelly Bean-esc kind of way. So basically you can now turn your 16gb model into 80gb device with a 64gb card.
This in my mind makes the Galaxy S4 the perfect device, the first ever perfect device ever built. I think Samsung will now easily reach the 100 million Galaxy S4 sold # quite quickly.

Well will this new news change your mind about purchasing a Galaxy S4, or are you a present owner doing backflips off the walls right now like myself?

Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Edition

image

Yesterday at Google I/O there wasn’t much in the way of product announcements, however there was one very interesting one. A collaboration of sorts with the #1 Android device maker Samsung. The New Galaxy S4 with a twist that should interest those who love a Nexus style Android experience.
The hardware is staying exactly the same as that in the original model, but the software will be a pure vanilla Android experience. So you lose all the features the device is known for, but that might not be as bad as it may seem. Samsung has received some flak over just how much internal storage said features takes up in the 16gb device. With all those features packed in leaves the user with around 8gb of storage from the get go. The Google Edition should leave users with around 14gb of storage.
Another great advantage would be in the update department where Google stated that the device will always be updated promptly with the latest version of Android.

If the device sounds appealing to you then you’ll want to check out the Google Playstore starting on the 26th. That’s when the device will become available & will sell for $649 in the US which is where it will first be made available with other markets to follow.

So what do you guys think of this device, is it worth the money considering it sells for the same as the feature packed model?
Do you care about the features of the S4 or is it the hardware  that draws your attention?

Bell & Rogers Galaxy Note updated to 4.1 Jelly Bean

image

Last week users of Telus’s Galaxy Note from Samsung got updated to Android version 4.1 Jelly Bean and now it’s users of the Bell & Rogers models getting the sweet treat.
Samsung stated that however at the moment the update for those carriers will have to be done via KIES software through your PC. I’m sure OTA updates will be pushed soon but as for now it’s only available through KIES. So make sure you have the most recent version of KIES installed on your PC & connect your Note to an available USB port and follow the onscreen directions. Make sure not to turn off your phone or disconnect it till the update is complete or you could run into some issues.
After you update & have a little time with your updated  device come back & let us know what you think. What’s your favorite feature is that the new JB update has brought to your Galaxy Note?
Let us know in the comments section below.

Telus Galaxy Note getting a new sweet treat ( Jelly Bean 4.1)

image

Telus had the original Samsung Galaxy Note update to Jelly Bean listed for May & have stayed very true to their word. May has just begun & said update has already begun to be pushed to the device OTA. It’s also available via Samsung’s KIES software on your PC. So if you haven’t received notification of the update on your Galaxy Note & you just can’t wait for it to be pushed to your device then connect it to your PC & Samsung’s software suite to get the update now.
Keep in mind that you may have to update KIES before your Galaxy Note will connect, so check for an update of the PC software if you have any issues.

After you’ve updated and had a chance to try the upgrade out come back & let us know what you think, & what’s your favorite addition or tweak to your phone that the upgrade brought?

Samsung quick to send out fix for Rogers Galaxy S2 LTE

image

Samsung sent out an update last week for Rogers customers who own the Galaxy S2 LTE & it seems there were some issues. Well Samsung has been very quick to fix these issues & have just announced on their Facebook page that they are rolling out an update to fix these issues. If you updated your Galaxy S2 LTE already you’ll need to update over KIES according to Samsung, but if you haven’t updated to JB yet then you can now update with an OTA update that should be waiting for you.

Go to your settings – About device – Software update – Update & download the new update with all the bugs fixed.
Great work with the quick fixes Samsung.
Has anyone updated previously & had issues then updated this new version? Does it fix the issues?
